Referencing the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, 25 of 2002 (ECTA), the primary purpose of a signature is to provide evidence of:

• The identity of the signatory.
• The signatory's intent to sign in agreement.
• The signatory's approval and acceptance of the document they are signing for.

Requirements for a Signature

For a signature to be valid, the following requirements must be met:

• The name or mark of the person signing must be present on the document.
• The signature must have been applied by the person themselves.
• The person signing must have willfully intended to sign the document.

Types of Digital Signatures

There are two types of digital signatures:

• Standard Electronic Signature
• Advanced Electronic Signature
